DescriptionMetal box iron or charcoal iron with wood handle. Made of heavy, solid iron. Seven holes along each of the long sides at bottom. Hinged top with swivel locking mechanism at the front point. Scalloped bottom edges on lid. Metal arms affix carved wood handle; handle is painted black with traces of red paint. Top of lid has raised curvilinear scrollwork. Back has metal plate that is detached on left end and covers an opening on the backside of the iron. Bottom is flat.Dimensions6.875 x 3.625 x 7.5 in. Historical NotesThis iron belonged to Joseph D'Andrea's mother, Candida, and is from their hometown of Roccamandolfi in Italy. Candida brought the iron to Pittsburgh when the family immigrated shortly after WWII. During his lifetime, Joseph D'Andrea was the Consul of Italy for Western Pennsylvania and West Virginia; President of the Pennsylvania State Education Association (PSEA); member of the Board of Directors of the National Education Association; member of the Historical Society of Western Pennsylvania's Board of Trustees and chair of its Italian American Advisory Council; and founder and president of the Italian Cultural Heritage Society (AMICI).
