Historical NotesPittsburgh Bicentennial celebration t-shirt donated by local writer Alfred Bortz. Alfred "Fred" Bortz is one of the nation's leading writers of science and technology for young people. From 1979 through 1994, he was involved in research at Carnegie Mellon University, from which he earned his doctorate in Physics in 1971. He also occasionally teaches writing courses on nature, science, and technology as part of a master's degree program at Chatham College.
