Historical NotesPart of WWI military collection belonging to Lieutenant Robert D. Christie. The black and gold cord surrounding the base indicates the wearer's status as an officer. Robert Christie was born in Louisville, Kentucky, in 1885. His father moved the family to Pittsburgh in the 1890s in order to take a job at the Western Theological Seminary. The family lived on Ridge Avenue in Allegheny (North Side). Christie graduated from Shadyside Academy in 1904, and Princeton in 1908. During World War I, he served as a captain in the 314th Infantry, 79th Division of the American Expeditionary Forces. In 1936, he married Rachel Alexander. Although he worked in advertising most of his life, he was also very interested in Western Pennsylvania History. For sixteen years he was the director of the Historical Society of Western Pennsylvania(1952-1968). Christie passed away in 1974, at his home in Shadyside.
