Historical NotesSan Rocco Festa (festival) t-shirt. Aliquippa’s San Rocco Festa celebrated its 90th anniversary in 2015; the first San Rocco Festa was held in Aliquippa in 1925, by Italian immigrants from the town of Patrica. Since the 1920s, the event has featured a Catholic mass at St. Titus Church and a procession of a San Rocco statue through the streets. As the years went on, the San Rocco Festa expanded to include a festival at a local fairground, which included food and game booths, performances, and fireworks; one unique offering of the festival is the Babydoll dance, a folk tradition brought from Patrica in the early 20th century. The first several decades of the San Rocco Festa were attended by an exclusively Italian audience; later decades saw a rise in participation from other ethnicities as the demographics of Aliquippa’s neighborhoods changed and Italian Americans intermarried. The event is one of the annual celebrations that brings widespread community excitement, as well as money and tourism, to Aliquippa, an economically depressed former steel town.
