DescriptionMilitary insignia. An oval-shaped tin plate covered with black velvet, soldered-on brass wire attachments. On the face is a pictured an eagle, based upon the Great Seal of the U.S., embroidered with gilt brass wire & round metal sequins; the eagle's tongue is indicated with red thread; the badge is bordered by a single length of gilded spiral wire, stitched in place.Dimensions3 x 2.25 in. (7.6 x 5.7 cm)Historical NotesThis Union Army Officer's hat insignia was worn by Gustavus Wenke of Pittsburgh. Wenke served as a 2nd Lieutenant with the 9th Pennsylvania Reserve Regiment, also known as the 38th Pennsylvania Volunteer Infantry, and was killed at the battle of Second Battle of Bull Run on August 30, 1862.Label TextGustavius Adolphus Wenke of Pittsburgh wore these badges on his uniform hat during his brief career as a Union Army soldier during the Civil War. German American Wenke joined the 9th Regiment of the Union’s Army on May 6, 1861 and served as 2nd Lieutenant until he lost his life at the Battle of Bull Run on August 30, 1862.
