Historical NotesCheerios box honoring disabled veterans in the 28th Annual Wheelchair Games; this box features local resident Dr. Rory Cooper of Gibsonia, PA. Dr. Rory Cooper is currently head of the University of Pittsburgh's Human Engineering Research Laboratory where he helps to guide emerging technologies and treatments to improve mobility for people with physical disabilities. Cooper suffered a spinal cord injury in 1980 while serving in the Army in Germany but soon earned a doctorate in electrical and computer engineering with a concentration in bioengineering from the University of California at Santa Barbara nine years later. In 1994, he was recruited to work at Pitt's School of Health & Rehabilitative Sciences. He has participated in 25 Wheelchair Games since his accident, winning a total of four gold medals for swimming and a silver medal in the slalom; as a result of his success, Cooper was one of twelve medal winners selected to appear on a special edition Cheerios cereal box in 2009.
