Historical NotesArmband worn on the home front by Milton "Bookie" Brown, who served as a Civil Defense Air-Raid Warden. All WWII Civil Defense Insignia used the blue circle design as a basis, with the central element denoting which branch, i.e., fireman, aircraft spotter, etc.; the striped triangle was the symbol for an Air Raid Warden.Label TextSet includes a hat, whistle, armband, and nightstick all worn or carried by Milton “Bookie” Brown who served as a Civil Defense Air-Raid Warden during World War II. Diary entries, located in the Historical Society’s Library and Archives, document how he and his wife Pauline Thornton Brown, both graduates of Allegheny College in Meadville, Pa, struggled like so many other young married couples of the early thirties to find jobs and establish their first home.
