Historical NotesThis instrument was given to Allegheny County by Dr. Domenico Pellegrino, the president of the Province of Isernia, as a gesture of international goodwill. The instrument was received by Joseph D' Andrea, the honorary Italian Counsul for Pittsburgh, at the Festa Delle Belle Arti in 1999.Label TextKnown as zampogna in Italian, these Italian bagpipes were handmade in the Abruzzo region of Italy. They were sent from family in Italy to donor Joseph D'Andrea's father living in the Pittsburgh neighborhood of Crafton Heights in the 1950s. The zampogna is made from sheepskin turned inside out, to which is affixed a series of wooden reeds. They are held and played much like the better-known Scottish bagpipes. Known to exist as early as the Roman period, bagpipes are now played in Europe, North Africa, and Asia. Made of olive wood. In 1999, these bagpipes were presented to the City of Pittsburgh by the Administration of the Provence of Isternia, Italy.
