Historical NotesThis rifle was made by S.G Schreckengost, a late 19th century gunsmith, probably working in Armstrong County. Three other members of the family, William (Putneyville), Peter (Kittanning), and Lincoln (Putneyville) are found in historical records. The lock was made by J. Golcher. Donated to the Carnegie Museum in 1922 by Mrs. W.E. Snyder. Transferred to the Heinz History Center in 1994.Label TextTraditional German folk designs appear in several forms, such as the engraved inlay elements that decorate this long rifle by Armstrong County gunsmith S.G. Schreckengost. The foliated vines and compass rose ornaments turn up frequently on painted furniture, frakturs, and quilt motifs from German settlements. Like numerous other gunsmiths throughout the state, Schreckengost is descended from German immigrants who introduced the art of rifle making into Pennsylvania.
