Historical NotesPaperweight featuring plaque from Horne's Department Store in Northway Mall, Ross Township, PA. Part of a collection from Horne's Department Store collected by donors George R. and Mary E. Wazenegger when Horne's was taken over by Lazarus in 1994. The Joseph Horne Company, often referred to simply as Horne's, was a regional department store chain based in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. The chain ceased operations in 1994, when Federated Department Stores acquired Horne's remaining ten stores and merged them with its Lazarus division, completely ceasing all operations of any store under the Horne's name. Several of the former Horne's stores operating as Lazarus were closed in 1998. Those that remained eventually became known as "Lazarus-Macy's" and in 2006 were joined with Kaufmann's in the nationwide Macy's consolidation. The Shoppes at Northway is a distinguished, well-established shopping center that has a unique history of being the first enclosed mall in Pennsylvania. The mall began as a strip mall called Northway Shopping Center in 1953; the Shoppes at Northway opened its doors in August of 1962 with the concept of being a family-oriented community shopping destination - a tradition that continues today. Anchored with such stores as: Border's Books and Music, Dick's Sporting Goods, Marshalls, Petsmart and Party City, the Shoppes at Northway offered an eclectic combination of exciting anchors and unique specialty shops giving the community a great selection of stores and services.
