DescriptionFramed oil painting on canvas depicting a portrait of a distinguished-looking man with light brown shoulder-length curly hair, wearing chest armor and underneath a white/grey shirt with high collar and black ties at the throat, gold armor on proper left shoulder, can barely make out armor on proper right shoulder. Bust portrait is depicted in three-quarter view with the figure facing slightly proper right; gaze is at the viewer. Frame is wooden with molded decoration painted black. InscriptionsRectangular brass plaque with rounded ends that is mounted at bottom center of frame has engraved text "LORD FALCONBURGH [sic] / SIR PETER LELY / 1618-1680"; note that the last name of the sitter is misspelled and should be "FAUCONBURGH".

Beale was an English portrait painter who became one of the most important portrait painters of 17th-century England; she has been described as the first professional female English painter.
