DescriptionIvory cotton baptismal gown with high neck and lace ruffle around the neck. Long sleeved with lace edged cuffs. Lace trim at bottom in three distinct sections. Back of the gown has a 13-inch opening from the neck down. Ivory lace and cotton cap has alternating rows of lace panels.Dimensions(a) 34.25 x 30 x 9 in. (87 x 76.2 x 22.9 cm)(b) 6.5 x 5 in.
Historical NotesBaptismal gown handmade by Emily Medick Kimmich for her daughter Henrietta Kimmich, born in 1899. German immigrant Emily Medick was a personal seamstress to the H.J. Heinz family until her marriage to another German immigrant, Louis Kimmich, in 1896. The family lived at 5412 Broad Street in East Liberty where Louis ran the L. Kimmich barber shop. The family had two children, a daughter named Henrietta and a son.
