Historical NotesThe doorman's uniform was worn by Vince Calloway who worked at Heinz Hall. The uniform was worn with a white button-down shirt, maroon necktie, and black shoes. Vince had been an usher and doorman since around the time Heinz Hall opened. Originally, his wife worked there as an usher, but after a few years she gave it up. Vince drove his wife to and from the Hall, so he started working there as well around 1971. At one point, about ten of Vince's family members were employed at Heinz Hall. Born in Atlanta, Georgia, he came to Pittsburgh as a child and lived his entire adult life here in Pittsburgh. Vince lived in Homewood and worked for Westinghouse at the Bettis Atomic facility in West Mifflin from 1940-1991. He is a World War II veteran, having served as a baker in the U.S. Navy. Vincent Calloway worked at Heinz Hall for over 35 years. In light of Mr. Calloway’s dedicated work at Heinz Hall, the Pittsburgh Symphony named an annual customer service award after him (he himself received the first award in 2001).
