Historical NotesCampaign poster, c. 1971, for Senator John Heinz III, for whom the History Center is named. Senator Heinz was the great-grandson of Henry Heinz, founder of the Heinz Company and son of Jack Heinz, the last family member to run the company. The Senator chose a life in politics rather than the family business. Heinz worked for the Heinz Company from 1965 to 1970 before successfully running for the 18th congressional district seat for Pennsylvania in 1971. He stayed in the House until successfully becoming a Pennsylvania State Senator in 1977. Heinz died in a plane crash in 1991.
