Historical NotesThis long rifle was made by William Shreckengost. The lock was made by Riddle.Label TextTraditional German folk designs appear in several forms, such as the engraved inlay elements that decorate this long rifle by Armstrong County gunsmith William Shreckengost. The foliated vines and compass rose ornaments turn up frequently on painted furniture, frakturs, and quilt motifs from German settlements. Like numerous other gunsmiths throughout the state, Shreckengost is descended from German immigrants who introduced the art of rifle making into Pennsylvania.
