The foliated vines and compass rose ornaments turn up frequently on painted furniture, frakturs, and quilt motifs from German settlements. Like numerous other gunsmiths throughout the state, Shreckengost is descended from German immigrants who introduced the art of rifle making into Pennsylvania.
