Historical NotesTogether with Silas Crispin, Thomas Jackson Rodman patented this improved metallic cartridge in 1863 for use in breech-loading carbines. The cartridge is made from rolled paper and brass foil, a construction which was thought to provide a better gas seal when firing. The cartridge also became known as "Poultney's Patent Metallic Cartridge" after the patent was assigned to Thomas Poultney.
