DescriptionAntique brass cash register with wooden base. Raised floral filagree design throughout surface. At top is a rectangular, clear glass viewing window where tabs indicate numbers that can pop up when keys are pressed. Two rows of keys, mostly black with white dollar and cent amounts as well as a no sale, quart, pint, and half pint keys that are different colors. Rectangular cash drawer across bottom front. Panel on the front above keys is hinged with a small keylock at center.Dimensions17 x 17.25 x 16 in. (43.2 x 43.8 x 40.6 cm)
InscriptionsOrange "NO / SALE" tag is currently raised.

Across the front is engraved "Chas. Schade".

Panel on the front opens and from left to right has two panels of color-coded counters that read: "CUSTOMER / COUNTER", "QUART", "NO / SALE", "PINT", and "1/2 PINT" with two finger wheels and a turning key that reads: "KEY LOCK".

On right side is another window displaying six numbers with a key on the right side that reads: "TURN TO / STOP". On underside of lid is a panel depicting five flowers with numbers at the center that from left to right read: "4863(?)" Above that to the left is the number "149" with raised dots around it.

Hinged bumpout panel on the right side of the machine with clear glass viewing window and keylock with the word "Check" stamped above a small slit on the side facing the front and a "5" above the lock on the side. On left side are two keylocks with a raised "2" and "3" to the left of each.

Sticker in upper right of display under hinged panel reads: "CASH REGISTER REPAIR CO / 2829 WATERMAN AVENUE / PITTSBURGH PENNSYLVANIA15227 / (412) 884-6911 / SALES . SERVICE . SALES . SERVICE".
MarksAcross top under viewing window is a metal plaque that reads: "NATIONAL CASH REGISTER CO. / DAYTON, OHIO, U.S.A." with patent dates on right and left sides.

On back in relief banner reads: "DAYTON NATIONAL OHIO".
Historical NotesCash register used at Chiodo's Tavern in Homestead, Pennsylvania. The register was previously used at the Homestead Hotel, which had occupied the building that became Chiodo’s Tavern. Part of a collection related to the Chiodo family and the Chiodo Tavern. Joe Chiodo came with his family to Homestead in 1927 at the age of 10 from Calabria, Italy. Chiodo helped his father in his cobbler business and then served in WWII. When he got back from the war, the family decided to purchase a new building for the shop at 107 W. Eighth Avenue in Homestead. The building had been a bar so they kept running it as a bar and the continued to do so until Joe retired and sold the building in 2005. Over the years, memorabilia from Joe’s time in WWII, local mills, etc., filled the walls and ceiling of the bar. These items were left in Joe’s house after he passed and were donated on behalf of his wife Florence.
