DescriptionSmall, hand-held hammer punch used to imprint "D. Stoner". Made from a single piece of steel. The handle is is a bulbous shape. Apparently lathe-turned with a flattened stemming surface at end. The working end of the punch his been forged into a tapered, flattened, blunt chisel shape, without lettering forming a revered embossed name to imprint an impressed design.Dimensions0.75 x 0.75 x 2.875 in. (1.9 x 1.9 x 7.3 cm)

Historical NotesFound in collection. Donor: Miss Sarah Stoner 11/2-37 "Tool used by David Stoner". Probably part of accession 1675. David Stoner appears in city directory of Pittsburgh beginning in 1850: listed as carpenter located at 57 Carroll Street in Allegheny; listed intermittently until 1875. This stamp was used to mark the James Gouges inventory #10-24). Accession 1675. Imprint "D. Stoner" used to stamp identification for tools, etc, or possibly as a maker's mark.
