DescriptionCommemorative flag with two medals mounted in triangular frame. American flag folded into a triangle and stored inside a brown stained wooden memorial flag case with Plexiglas window. Case handmade. Visible through the window is the blue canton and three white embroidered stars. Attached to flag are two medals: Bronze Star and Purple Heart. Four circular purple felt bumper pads on base.Dimensions12 x 3.625 x 26.75 in. (30.5 x 9.2 x 67.9 cm)MarksHandwriting in black marker on base of frame "HAND MADE [sic] / BY RUDY & VICKI RUDLOFF / JULY 2009 / FOR / MONICA CRISTIANO" and blue ink on base of rame "RUSSELL / KLAGES".
Historical NotesPFC Russell J. Klages, from the Shadyside neighborhood of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, served in the Pacific Theater of World War II. Killed in action on April 19, 1945, he was posthumously awarded the Bronze Star for exposing himself to Japanese fire while shouting a warning to his comrades. His remains were interred in the Santa Barbara Cemetery near Manila, in the Philippines.
