Label TextThe design of this pen wiper and stationary exemplify the patriotic fervor that characterized the Sanitary Fair. Made in the shape of an American flag, the pen wiper is one example of the many items sold to fair visitors. The stationary includes such patriotic motifs as the bald eagle, the American flag, the Pennsylvania state seal, and the words "liberty, law, and union" The names of the Sanitary Fair executive committee, many of whom were women, appear at the bottom. Honorary members included such national personalities as General Ulysses S. Grant and President Abraham Lincoln.
