DescriptionTwo-sided square collage on a stylized, colored (red, green, yellow, and orange) magazine paper made to look like newspaper. Both sides of the piece could be used in a larger collage. One side has patterned magazine paper and solid-colored construction paper, overlapped in several layers; the topmost clipping is a black magazine photograph cut irregularly so that it covers most of the surface; a profile of a coalminer is featured in the top right corner as well as the underlined word. Other side has pink construction paper with pastel markings in white, yellow, purple, green, pink, and blue adhered to the center of piece.Dimensions6.563 x 6.688 in. Historical NotesArtwork by the Pittsburgh artist Samuel Rosenberg. Artist and teacher Samuel Rosenberg (1896-1972) had a prolific career in Pittsburgh, leading him to be called the “Dean of Pittsburgh painters.” He is perhaps best-known for his scenes of the Hill District in the 1920s and 1930s. Rosenberg was a beloved presence in the Pittsburgh art world and influenced numerous artists through his teaching careers at the Irene Kaufmann Settlement, Young Men & Women’s Hebrew Association, and Carnegie Tech.
