Not only did the Pittsburgh Hornets, Ice Capades, and Civic Light Opera call the arena home, but many other events were booked in the revolutionary new space. Pittsburgh companies came together to build the state of the art venue with its innovative retractable roof. The engineering firm of Heyl & Patterson designed the system that opened the roof, powered by Westinghouse motors, while American Bridge created the steel support structure.
