Historical NotesA piece of stanchion from first event, the Ice Capades, held at the Civic Arena when it opened in September of 1961.Label TextWhen it opened to the public in 1961 the Civic Arena became the crowning glory of the Lower Hill redevelopment. Not only did the Pittsburgh Hornets, Ice Capades, and Civic Light Opera call the arena home, but many other events were booked in the revolutionary new space. Pittsburgh companies came together to build the state of the art venue with its innovative retractable roof. The engineering firm of Heyl & Patterson designed the system that opened the roof, powered by Westinghouse motors, while American Bridge created the steel support structure.
