Historical NotesSimple forms such as these knobs were some of the earliest pieces made using the pressing process. Built in 1808 along the Monongahela River, the Bakewell factory produced glass tableware, windows, and bottles. They were among the first in the nation to begin pressing glass in the 1820s. Donor purchased the object from Jeffrey S. Evans Auction House in Harrisonburg, Virginia in May of 2014. Item was from the collection of the late Dr. E. R. Eller, former curator at the Carnegie Institute of Pittsburgh.
