Historical NotesA beer tray advertising E&O Beer from the Pittsburgh Brewing Company. E&O, standing for Eberhardt and Ober, traces its roots to several German immigrant-run breweries in Allegheny City, Pennsylvania (now the North Side of Pittsburgh). The Eberhardt and Ober Brewing Company was founded in c. 1870, by John Peter Ober and his brother-in-law William Eberhardt. The factory was located at Troy Hill Road and Vinia Street in the Troy Hill section of Allegheny City. In 1889, E&O was one of the 21 breweries to join "the great combine," forming a company known hence as the Pittsburgh Brewing Company. E&O continued to produce beer until 1952, after which time the complex was adapted into various uses including cold storage and light manufacturing. Since 1986, parts of the facility have operated as the Pennsylvania Brewing Company, a German-style microbrewery and restaurant.
