DescriptionDark blue wool Mercy Hospital cape with hospital initials embroidered in yellow thread on the collar. On the proper left flap of the cap are two strap components with plastic black buttons that strap across the chest. There is one corresponding black plastic button on the proper right flap. The inside of the proper right flap has one smaller strap and button components that has a corresponding button on the inside of the proper left flap. There is a metal loop and hook at the top of the front of the neck. Sewn to the inside of the nape of the neck is a silver metal chain. Sewn to the inside of the back of the cape is a manufacturer's tag embroidered in yellow thread. There is a pocket on the inside of the proper left of the cape. The inside is lined with red wool.Dimensions16.5 x 33.625 in. (41.9 x 85.4 cm)Inscriptions"MH" embroidered in yellow thread on the collar.
MarksSewn to the inside of the back of the cape is a manufacturer's tag reading "NURSES' APPAREL / Bruck's / TAILORED BY BRUCK'S NURSES OUTFITTING CO. INC. / M.M.G." embroidered in yellow thread.
Historical NotesPart of a collection that documents the contributions of Catholic orders to healthcare in Western Pennsylvania. The collection was originally on display at Slippery Rock University as an exhibition titled, "Sisters in Healthcare: Sixteen Communities of Religious Sisters in Western PA, 1847-1969." With this collection, the History Center has the largest collection of Pre-Vatican II habits in the United States. Many of the long-standing healthcare facilities in the region were started by the Sisters including Mercy Hospital, St. Francis Hospital, and many others.
