Historical NotesWilliam C. Hopper is the only known Pittsburgher to have been granted a patent for the design of a plane. He was an inventer and entrepreneur, but he did not make planes himself. His design was to provide a consistently fine cut. Used by carpenters to finish smoothing a board.
