DescriptionTwo-piece evening made of light yellow-green moire silk. Lined throughout in lavender silk. Short bodice with stays in all seams. Back has hook-and-eye opening. Wide scoop neck ending in ruffled cap sleeves with added band over upper arm. Neck, sleeves decorative front tabs and center back all edged with rows of beige (machine lace with bobbin applique) and black lace (machine lace). Spray of cloth orchids and green leaves sewn to right front shoulder. Tabs and front and rear panels have scallop and orchid designs in black sequins, silver beads, and black beads.Dimensions40 in. (101.6 cm)

Historical NotesThis gown was worn by Sarah Kerr Cole, wife of Consul-General Charles Lawrence Cole at the court of King Albert and Queen Carola of Saxony, Germany. She was presented on January 1, 1898. It was made by Stern Co. in Vienna, Austria. Donated to the Carnegie Museum of Natural History in 1936 by their daughter Edith Cole Granger. Transferred to the Historical Society of Western Pennsylvania in 1994.
