Historical NotesPart of a collection previously belonging to the Saint Casimir Alumni Association that documents Saint Casimir school. St. Casimir school and church, which served the Lithuanian community in the South Side, was constructed around 1900 at 22nd and Sarah Streets. It was the first Lithuanian parish in the city, established in the early 1890s to serve the growing community of mill workers. In 1908 the school added additional floors, in 1934 they added the ninth grade, and then in 1937 they added a high school. Their award winning basketball team started in the early 1940s under the coaching of Gus Krop (coached from 1944 to 1961). They won the PCIAA State Championship in 1945, 1946, and 1956. The school closed in 1969. The parish closed in 1992. The school has now been turned into condominiums.
