Historical NotesA WWII duffle bag used by the donor, Catherine "Kay" Gimbus, who was born in Midland, PA, to a Serbian Orthodox family and attended Lincoln High School. Her mother passed away around 1940; therefore, her father was not thrilled when Kay, his youngest child, enlisted for WAC service in 1942. Kay served most of her time in the U.S., though she had volunteered for overseas duty from the time she enlisted. She was finally sent to Europe in May 1945, just in time for V-E Day--she also was abroad for V-J Day, August 15, 1945. Her uniform (2007.74.1) was donated in 2007. After her discharge, Kay returned to Midland. She later attended business school and was a beautician.
