Historical NotesThis red and green appliqué quilt was created by Alosia Rosaltha Cadwallader Cramer (1868-1953), of Welsh descent and grandmother of donor Janet Davis. This particular appliqué design is believed to be very original, despite using the popular red and green colors of the time. According to a textile historian: "Most appliqué designs are symmetrical and feature four or eight elements. This one is asymmetrical and exhibits excellent craftsmanship. The design shows that the maker was well-versed in the 19th century appliqué tradition, but chose to create her own pattern in that vernacular...It's also very finely corded in green around the inner border...You just don't see quilts like this everyday."
