"ELASTIC EXTENSION SYRINGE. / Manufactured by MATTSON & CO., Boston.";
"USE, &c.- Make firm compression of the Receiver A, and allow / it to expand, immersing the end of the supply tube B in the fluid / to be injected. It is better to fill the Receiver with the fluid before / inserting the tube C into the bowels. Avoid sediment in the in- / jections. If the instrument does not work well, free the valves / (situated at B and E) from the sediment, particularly the valve at E. / See also that the leather washers make tight joints. Use the tube D for the Female / injections. Turpentine [illegible] to the elastic material. After using / the syringe, [illegible] coupling B, and compress the Receiver / two or three times [illegible] in order to expel and fluid which may remain.";

Historical NotesPart of a collection of medical supplies of Dr. James Glenn Dickson who operated in the Canonsburg area from the 1840s to the 1870s. Donor Melinda Hays Evans’ family found the apothecary chest with accompanying medical supplies in a barn on their property in the Canonsburg area. The collection documents the practice of a mid-19th century small town doctor.
