Historical NotesThe donor's great uncle, John Cowan McClung, volunteered as a federal soldier in August 1862 with the 136th PA Regiment. He was sent to Virginia for basic training and then to Washington, D.C. for guard service. He died on Nov. 23, 1862 in Point Pleasant Hospital near Arlington of disease, probably pneumonia. He saw no action in the Civil War. It is unclear where or how he obtained the small hand-sewn flag. Note written on flag claims it was captured at Cheat Mountain.
