Historical NotesPortrait of Azen’s Furs' founder Maxamillian Azen by H. Lewis. Max Azen (1871-1943) emigrated from Vilna, Russia. He married Lottie Bessie Jacobson (born 1873 in Letvia, Russia) in Russia before they emigrated in 1906. While in Russia, he was a traveling fur salesmen. He opened his first store in 1908, which sold men’s clothing and fur, and after several moves around town he eventually focused on fur and women’s apparel. Azen’s was a popular downtown Pittsburgh fur store with its final location at the triangle of Liberty, Wood, and Sixth Streets. In 1981, the Azens sold their family business.
