Historical NotesLab coat worn by Dr. George J. Magovern, who joined the medical staff at Allegheny General Hospital in 1959, and served as Chairman of the Department of Surgery for 25 years. He was involved with some of the most important advancements in heart surgery, including developing the sutureless heart valve and a nuclear pacemaker. Though now retired, Dr. Magovern continues with the hospital and the Drexel University School of Medicine as a professor of surgery.Label TextAfter developing the sutureless heart valve, Dr. Magovern had to resolve the issue of how to put it in place. Working with engineer Harry Cromie he came up with these handles. The heart valve is held at the top of the handle (refer to the handle in the case). Once the valve is in place, five or six turns of the handle releases the double row of prongs, the valve grasps tissue, and it is in place.
