Historical NotesCash drawer from Pollock's Department Store located in Gallitzin, Pennsylvania, west of Altoona. Melvin Pollock was born in Gallitzin, Pennsylvania in 1918, served in WWII and later owned and managed Pollock’s Department Store which was started by his father Samuel in 1914. He went on to start many stores specializing in children’s clothes including Young Fashions in the Miracle Mile in Monroeville and Tweens and Teens. He was very involved in the business and community life in Monroeville, Pennsylvania. Having two children die from AIDS led to a lifelong involvement in the Shepherd Wellness Community for he and his wife Beverly. The Shepherd Wellness Community started in 1987 and was the first and only place where people with AIDS could go for support and education in the region.
