Historical NotesWestinghouse J-40 Jet Engine model. This model was most likely used for marketing out of the Baltimore office. The J-40 was deemed a failure for Westinghouse Aviation Gas Turbine Division. After WWII the Navy was interested in developing a turbojet with improved fuel consumption at high altitudes. Westinghouse first began the design of the J-40 in 1947 and first tested it in 1951. In the end, the engine was never produced in quantity due to insufficient thrust, critical problems, and delays in production. The J-40 program was terminated in 1955. The model was donated to the National Electronics Museum (NEM) by former Westinghouse employee John Lawton. In 2018 it was transferred to the Senator John Heinz History Center.
