Historical NotesPair of boots worn by photo-journalist Martha Rial when on assignment in the African nations of Rwanda, Burundi, and Tanzania, in 1996-1997 for the Pittsburgh-Post Gazette. Rial won the Pulitzer Prize for her photos of refugees of the Rwandan Civil War. A native of Murrysville, Pennsylvania, Martha Rial worked for the Pittsburgh-Post Gazette since 1994. She was a graduate of the Art Institute of Pittsburgh and Ohio University's School of Visual Communication. Rial won the Pulitzer Prize for spot news photography in 1998 after her three-week stay in central Africa, where she took unforgettable photographs of refugees; her photo journal of their extraordinary exodus is entitled, "Trek of Tears." Rial currently resides in Squirrel Hill.
