Kaufmann and Baer Company

1914 - 1925
BiographyThe store was opened by cousins of the original Kaufmann’s Department store in 1914 after they were angered over not obtaining an ownership interest in the original family store. Morris Baer, one of the seven cousins who formed the new store, established their business at the corner of Smithfield and Sixth Avenue. The store was bought by Gimbels in 1925 but the family still ran much of the operations.
