DescriptionSilver-colored pressed metal police badge. Circular silver shield shape with feather design around the bottom edge. Image of an eagle at the top of the shield. Around the outside edge of the shield in black enamel is name of police department. Stamped across center is wearer's title. Below the shield is a banner with state abbreviation. Vertical straight pin on the back of the badge. Two holes in the back of badge.Dimensions2.875 x 2.75 in. (7.3 x 7 cm)
InscriptionsAround the outside edge of the shield in black enamel reads: "BUREAU OF POLICE PITTSBURGH".

Stamped across center reads: "CANINE / INSTRUCTOR".

Below the shield is a banner that reads "PA.".
Historical NotesPatrolman Julius P. Kmak and Ben Polumbi were the founding members of the Pittsburgh Police's K-9 Unit which was established on November 17,1958. The Police Canine badge is awarded to the dog's handler and dog upon completion of an intensive training regime at the training academy. Dogs are not given a badge or considered a Police K-9 until they have successfully completed the 3-4 month program and have proven their proficiency. Part of the Pittsburgh Police Historical Association collection.
