Stamped across center reads: "GRADE / DETECTIVE / III".

Below the shield is a banner that reads "PA.".
Historical NotesThe Pittsburgh Police badge was designed and officially adopted by the city in 1873. The shield is a circular fighting shield used by 15th century Greek foot soldiers. Part of the Pittsburgh Police Historical Association collection.
