Historical NotesGulf pen and pencil set used by William C. King while working for the Gulf Oil Corporation. The pen is the one he used to sign the contract for the sale of the Gulf Building on the afternoon of May 31, 1985. On that day, the corporation closed its doors for business in Pittsburgh, and became an integral part of the Chevron Oil Corporation, headquartered in San Francisco. The company is now called Chevron/Texaco. The pen and pencil set resided in Pittsburgh for many years, and also in London for five years. It traveled widely, including to much of the United States, Canada, Uruguay, Argentina, all of Western Europe, Lebanon, Kuwait, Hawaii, Japan, Hong Kong, Korea and Taiwan. This ordinary object says much about the economic changes that the region underwent in the 1970s and 80s.
