DescriptionCast iron gas cookstove with four (4) burner lids, three (3) burner grates, and two (2) side platforms. Cast iron gas cookstove. Short, square cooktop range with four circular openings on top with sunken rims; inside each opening is a gas burner. Rear of cooktop has oval flue opening with raised rim. Front has four conical white porcelain gas fuel valve handles. Pipe for gas runs along front just below the valve handles, around the proper left side, and the back where the pipe is open at the end; front end of the gas pipe in the front proper right corner is capped. Pull-out metal sheet below gas valve handles. Cookstove has four curved legs with feet flaring outward; shelf sits inside the four legs. Raised curvilinear forms decorate the legs and the left and right side aprons. Overall red-brown coloring with remnants of silver paint. Three (3) cast iron burner lids. Flat, circular burner lids. Two have circular opening at center. Top has recess with two side notches for lid removal. Overall red-brown coloring with remnants of silver paint. Inserts into top of cookstove. Three (3) cast iron burner grates. Thick, sloped circular outer ring with sixteen (16) inward radiating bars; bars alternate long and short and are connected with scalloped ring. Overall black and red-brown coloring. Insert into top of cookstove on any burner. Two (2) side platforms. Removable tabletop platform. Rounded rectangular shape with downturned edges on three sides. Each short side has two rectangular openings. Interior long edge has two hooked tabs for mounting onto left or right side of cookstove’s cooktop, one platform is missing these tabs. Historical NotesCast iron cookstove from Olive Stove Works in Rochester Pennsylvania, c. 1890. Donor Melva Devin's family, the Eakins, owned Olive Stove Works in Rochester, PA (Beaver County). The Eakins were a prominent family in and around Beaver, PA. Not only owning a large company but also running a farm, serving as a steamboat clerks and captains, and holding numerous elected positions in Beaver County’s government. Olive Stove Works was founded in 1872 by Daniel Fitch but was sold at sheriff’s sale in 1879 to John R. Eakin (1829-1907) who owned the plant till his death in 1907. His son Joseph M. Eakin ran the company after his death, until he passed in 1935. The stove works closed in 1938. They primarily served the local market of Western Pennsylvania, Ohio, and West Virginia and specialized in stoves that were made of more expensive materials and had more detailed applications. This stove was kept in the family since the closing of the business.
