The subject is shown seated, her hands on her lap; she wears a black dress with a wide lace collar and brooch; her hair is drawn back & parted in the middle; she is shown in an interior setting, sitting in a chair with red upholstery; there is a gilded frame at upper right; her right arm rests on a table with a patterned cloth, upon which a bible rests; heavy red drapery w/ large tassel at left; the painting is mounted in an arched-topped frame w/elaborate moulded designs, inlcluding intertwined rings at the top.Dimensions27.9999 x 24 x 3.75 in. (71.1 x 61 x 9.5 cm)
MarksHand-written label on reverse reads: "Portrait (done on ivory) (sic) Rebecca Miller Lambert / born in Beaver County in 1819 / Died in 1887 / this portrait was presented by IOOF 1859 / presented by Mrs. Clara L Paine"
Historical NotesRebecca Miller Lambert was married to Pittsburgh merchant Henry Lambert. Rebecca was born in Beaver County, Pennsylvania in 1819. Her husband was born in Ireland in 1812 and moved to Pittsburgh in 1829. This painting was donated to the Carnegie Museum of Natural History in 1918 by Clara Cainn. It was transferred to the Heinz History Center in 1994.
