DescriptionTinted glass award with burgundy fabric sleeve. Award is oval shaped with a flat bottom and sides that slope gradually upward to form a shallow bowl. Gold-colored border around edge of award with gold-colored text along the top and bottom. Metal medallion in middle of award that features etched text around the edge along with stars; center of medallion has etched image of two men standing on either side of a desk while a man in the middle is bent over signing something with a quill and ink. A man is sitting at the desk opposite the three men. Burgundy fabric sleeve is rectangular in shape with visible seams along three of the sides. Historical NotesThis award from the Pennsylvania State Education Association (PSEA) was given to Joseph D’Andrea, the organization’s former president from 1974-1976. The PSEA is the state’s largest teachers’ union and lobbies on behalf of K-12 teachers. During D’Andrea’s tenure at PSEA and the NEA (National Education Association), he represented the United States at international conferences where he presented on education reform, human rights, and political rights. He also advocated for fair wages and improved conditions for teachers and pushed for more financial support of public schools by local communities and businesses. He taught Spanish at Moon Area High School and oversaw the school’s foreign language department until his retirement.
