Historical NotesArgo 2017 Ford Fusion hybrid test vehicle equipped with autonomous driving technology.Label TextThese cars have navigated the streets of Pittsburgh for the past few years. Self-driving cars, which only existed in science fiction until recently, are now a reality and companies such as Strip District based Argo AI are at the forefront of the research. Started by two alumni of Carnegie Mellon’s National Robotics Engineering Center, Bryan Salesky and Peter Rander identified a gap in the existing driverless technologies when they started their company in 2016. Salesky, a 2002 University of Pittsburgh graduate, honed his skills as an organizer at Union Switch and Signal and as an expert in self-driving software as a member of the CMU team that won the 2007 Urban Challenge, a competition where a robot must navigate through a mock city environment. After working for Google’s self-driving teams for a few years, Salesky moved back to Pittsburgh and teamed up with Rander, who had recently left Uber, to form their own company. Not wanting to be in the car manufacturing business, they approached Ford with the offer to develop self-driving technology. Ford, lagging other car manufacturers in the race towards automation provided the seed money for ARGO AI.
