DescriptionReusable tote bag made of red woven polypropylene(?) fabric. Rectangular bag with two strap handles. Bag folds to flat. Front has white printed commemorative text, business information, and sponsor logos. Red loop at the top center of the front panel. Historical NotesGroceria Merante 40th anniversary reusable tote. Groceria Merante in the South Oakland neighborhood of Pittsburgh celebrated 40 years as a family-owned business. Sisters Filomena and Julia Merante co-own the market, which they took over from their parents Italo and Filomena, immigrants from Italy. The shop carries imported Italian ingredients and homemade sauce, sausage, fried peppers, and sandwiches. The clientele has shifted from customers of Italian descent from the neighborhood to employees from the Oakland-based hospitals, Pitt’s students and alumni, and people seeking authentic Italian fare. In celebration of the milestone, the shop hosted a block party on August 24, 2019 with vendors sampling Italian foods; listed on the shopping bag are food companies (some local) that participated in the block party.
