DescriptionPair of baseball cleats. Black leather cleats with off-white leather trim around opening. Tongue has sawtooth edge. Off-white fabric shoelaces with plastic aglets are threaded through twelve black metal eyelets (two rows of six). Brown leather interior and insole. Leather sole with white stitching around the perimeter. Historical NotesPair of black leather baseball cleats worn by Homestead, Pennsylvania, native and resident John A. Asmonga. Nephew of Stephen, who was shot by a Pinkerton guard in the 1892 Battle of Homestead, he played baseball for the Homestead Aces, a championship team of steelworkers in the late 1920s and 1930s. The cleats date to this era. John and his brother Joe “Mutt” both pitched and played center field. Donated by John’s daughter-in-law Linda M. Asmonga, the family was active in the Battle of Homestead Foundation.
