Historical NotesUsed by John Axtell during the 1950s or 1960s on visits to the home of his aunt and uncle in Pittsburgh. Kept in Pittsburgh until 1962 when house was torn down. Label TextThe flexible flyer was created in the 1880s by Samuel Leeds Allen, the founder of S.L. Allen & Co. in Philadelphia. The company originally manufactured only farm equipment but Allen, a “coasting” enthusiast, decided to produce and sell his sledding creation in order to diversify his product line and provide work for his employees in the winter. The flexible flyer has been a must-have for winter sledding ever since. This particular sled is from around 1920.
