Historical NotesThis sugar bowl was used during annual teas held by the St. Francis School of Nursing Alumni Association, as well as for gatherings in celebration of awards and scholarships. St. Francis General Hospital was founded in a frame house in Lawrenceville shortly after the Civil War by the Sisters of the Third Order of St. Francis. Its School of Nursing was founded in 1901 as a three-year program. The first graduation ceremonies were held in 1904. An Alumni Association was formed in 1909. The Association established several awards and scholarships throughout its history, several of which remain in place. The school closed immediately following the sale of St. Francis Medical Center (now the site of Children’s Hospital, Lawrenceville) to UPMC in 2002. The Alumni Association remains active.
