Historical NotesTablecloth with the embroidered names of Temple Beth Am members. Temple Beth Am in Monessen, Pennsylvania was created through the 1967 merger of Kneseth Israel Hebrew Congregation of Monessen and Rodef Shalom Congregation of Charleroi. Kneseth Israel Hebrew Congregation was chartered in 1908 and dedicated its first synagogue on Schoonmaker Avenue in 1911. The property included a community center known as the AZA House. Kneseth Israel dedicated a new synagogue on Watkins Avenue in 1954. The congregation began as Orthodox and moved toward Conservative. Rodef Shalom Congregation was chartered in 1924 and built a synagogue on Washington Street in 1925. The congregation was Reform, as was the merged Temple Beth Am. Temple Beth Am also operated a nursery school inclusive to the greater public. Due to a dwindling membership and financial hardship, the temple closed in 2019.
